Breakdown

Y Post out of Pro Far 21 personnel is a man beating dropback pass built around the Y (TE) running a deep post from the attached tight end alignment, with the outside receivers running clearout routes to open the middle of the field. The two backs stay in to help protect, giving the quarterback a clean pocket to work through his read on a full seven man protection scheme. The primary read progression starts with the Y post attacking the seam or hole in the coverage, then works to the underneath check down backs out of the backfield if the post is capped by a deep safety.

Defensive Reads

Check the free safety depth and leverage before the snap, a shaded safety toward the Y side signals the post will be taken away and you should hot route or check to Inside Cross instead Watch for robber or lurk defenders sitting underneath in Cover 3 or Tampa 2 looks since they can jump the post if the quarterback stares it down Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets exposed by this route, especially against Cover 0 blitzes where the post beats man leverage on the break Identify blitz packages pre-snap by checking linebacker depth and edge alignment, since the two backs need to pick up extra rushers and a six or seven man blitz can collapse the pocket before the post develops Post-snap, track the middle linebacker's drop, if he sinks deep into the throwing lane on a Cover 2 or Cover 4 shell the window tightens and checking down becomes the smarter play

Usage Tips

Look for single high safety shells like Cover 1 or Cover 3 before the snap since the post route thrives when there is only one defender responsible for the deep middle

Motion the TE or use a hot route to convert the Y route into a deep dig if you see a two high shell rotating down to take away the post

Pair this play with HB Dive and FB Dive Weak on early downs to sell run action and get linebackers to bite up before hitting the post in play action situations

Best called on second and medium or third and long when you need an explosive gain and the defense is likely sitting in zone drops or press man

Sequence this with Slants or Curls earlier in a series to condition the defense to expect short routes, then hit the Y Post for a chunk play when they jump the underneath stuff
