Omaha out of Pro Far (21 personnel) is a play action pass built off Cover 2 beater principles. The play art shows the outside receiver running a post deep into the middle of the field while the inline TE releases into a flat route underneath, creating a natural high low read against the flat defender and deep half safety. The backside X runs a short out breaking to the sideline, giving a quick zone beater option against soft coverage or blitz looks. Primary read progression starts with the post to look off the deep safety, then works down to the flat route for the leverage throw, with the backside out as the checkdown against man coverage rolled away from the concept.
Defensive Reads
Read the safety depth before the snap, a single high safety cheating toward the post side signals man coverage or Cover 3, which invites a hard user pick on the post route. Watch the flat defender's initial step, if he sinks with the TE's flat route without hesitation that confirms zone drops and opens up the backside out route against a wider zone gap. Diagnose linebacker depth at the snap, shallow linebackers biting on the play action fake create a soft window for the post route to split the seam behind them. Against Cover 2, key the deep half safety's leverage, if he stays flat footed reading run action the post route can beat him over the top before he recovers. Beware disguised blitzes that show two high safeties then roll one down, this eliminates the post's deep help and turns Omaha into a quick decision play where the flat and out routes become mandatory outlets.
Usage Tips
Use Omaha on early downs when you want to sell run action out of 21 personnel and get linebackers flowing before the post route clears behind them.
Check the safeties pre snap, if you see two high shells shifting to one side post snap it confirms Cover 2 or Cover 4 and the post over the top becomes your first read against a rotating safety.
Hot route the flat defender's man to a flat or corner route if you diagnose Cover 3 or Cover 4 to give yourself an extra option against a sinking cornerback.
Pair Omaha with Y Fost or Y Post in the same set to keep defenses guessing between play action shots and quick game concepts out of the same personnel and alignment.
Best used on second and medium or first and ten where defenses are more willing to bite on the run fake, giving the post route a cleaner angle against a crashing safety.
