This is a run blitz and short passing game blitz designed to collapse the pocket immediately and blow up inside handoffs before they develop, rather than a coverage-based zone or man beater. With only shallow underneath coverage left behind the rush, the primary read for the defense is filling downhill fast and trusting the interior gap integrity to force negative plays or a rushed throw.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check the offensive line splits and running back depth, tight splits with a back in a shallow set usually mean inside run or quick game, both of which this blitz is built to stop. Post-snap, key the center and guards, if they immediately climb to block the interior rushers instead of releasing to the second level, that confirms the blitz has disrupted a run play at the mesh point. Watch for hot routes on slot receivers or the tight end running quick outs and slants, since the vacated underneath zone is the primary weakness against man beater or zone beater quick game concepts. This blitz shuts down inside zone, dive plays, and short drop dropback passing, but it is vulnerable to screens and RPO bubble concepts that use the interior rush aggression against itself. If the user controls a linebacker to spy the quarterback, watch for delayed handoffs or draw plays designed to hit after the initial rush surge passes the mesh point.

Usage Tips

Call this on short yardage and third and short situations where the offense is likely to run inside zone or a quick draw, since the interior gap saturation blows up those runs before the back can get to the line.

Use pre-snap motion or a hot route audible on the outside defenders if you diagnose an outside run, since this blitz sacrifices edge integrity to load the interior.

Pair this with Cover 1 Contain in your play-calling sequence so the offense cannot key blitz tells off your alignment, alternating between all out interior pressure and a contain rush that still shows five in the box.

If the quarterback is mobile, be ready to spy or user the free defender underneath since the interior rush can open escape lanes to the edge.

Avoid calling this against empty or heavy shotgun spread sets on early downs, since the vacated underneath zones get exposed instantly by quick game route combos like slants and stick concepts.
