Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment, if you see one true deep safety with no second high defender you are almost certainly facing Cover 1 Hole or a variant of it. Watch for the middle linebacker or nickel defender sitting shallow around ten to twelve yards, that is your hole player and he will rob any in-breaking route thrown behind the linebackers. This coverage gets beat by vertical seam routes and deep outs since the underneath defenders are locked in man and cannot help over the top against double moves. Pre-snap, identify if the offense is stacked with two receivers to one side or running bunch formations since the hole defender can get picked off by natural traffic.
Motion an offensive player across the formation to force the defense to declare man coverage rotation, this reveals if the deep safety is truly locked in single high or shading a specific receiver.
Pair this call with Cover 3 Match or Cover 1 Contain in your play-calling sequence so quarterbacks cannot key on the middle robber every snap and start attacking the flat or deep outside instead.
