Breakdown

Slant Weak 3 out of the Bear 46 formation is a run-blitz oriented front dressed up with a Cover 3 zone shell on the back end. The three deep defenders drop straight down the middle of the field to wall off the deep thirds, while both flanking underneath defenders sink into curl or flat zones on their respective hashes. Up front, the defensive line executes a hard weak-side line slant, with all four rushers crashing toward the same gap to blow up gap schemes and get quick penetration on inside runs, making this fundamentally a zone-based run stopper with light pass-rush disguise rather than a man beater or blitz-heavy exotic front.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check offensive line splits and running back alignment, since heavy weak-side gap runs are exactly what this line slant is designed to destroy at the point of attack. Post-snap, key the guard and tackle on the slant side, if they are trying to double team or combo block down, your linemen should already be shooting through the gap before the double team sets. This front is vulnerable to counters and gap runs that pull the play strength away from the slant direction, so if you see pullers moving opposite the slant call, get ready to redirect linebackers quickly. Against the pass, the Cover 3 shell leaves the deep middle covered by a single deep defender, so watch for offenses attacking the seams between the deep third defenders with vertical routes. Underneath, the curl-flat zone defenders can be stressed by quick out routes or flat routes combined with a deep corner route, so user control a zone defender if you see a two-man route combo attacking one flat zone.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs when you expect inside zone, dive, or gap runs to the weak side since the line slant is designed to blow up those blocking schemes immediately.

Pre-snap, identify if the offense is showing a run-heavy personnel grouping or pulling linemen, since the slant technique loses value against outside zone or perimeter runs that flow away from the slant direction.

Because the back seven is playing Cover 3 zone drops, this play still holds up against quick game passing concepts, so do not abandon it just because the offense shows pass personnel.

Sequence this with Cover 1 or LB Blitz 3 from the same set to disguise your run-stopping intent, since all three plays share a similar pre-snap look but attack blockers differently.

Use user control on one of the underneath zone defenders to jump short crossers or slants that try to attack the vacated middle zone created by the line slant.
