Gap Press is a run-stop front out of the Bear 46 formation designed to plug interior gaps and win the line of scrimmage immediately after the snap. Defensive Reads
Read the offensive line splits and backfield alignment pre-snap, since Gap Press is built to stop inside zone, power, and dive concepts between the tackles. Watch for pulling guards or lead blockers, as Gap Press wants defenders shooting gaps before blockers can climb to the second level. This front is exposed to play-action rollouts and boot passes because the linebackers and defensive line are selling out on the run fake. Check the deep safeties and outside zone drops before the snap, since only three defenders are protecting against a pass, making this vulnerable to any four-plus receiver route concept. Post-snap, monitor whether the running back bounces outside quickly, since the interior gap defenders may overrun contain and leave the edge exposed.
Usage Tips
Call Gap Press in short yardage and goal line situations where you expect a run between the tackles, since the entire front is crashing downhill on the snap.
