Engage Eight is a run stop blitz package out of the 46 Bear Base 4-3 personnel, sending five defenders straight downhill through the box gaps to blow up run plays before they develop. Three deep defenders drop into a split-field shell to guard against the play-action shots that offenses use to punish heavy run blitzes, with two of them cutting inward and one holding the deep third. This is not a route concept but a gap-integrity blitz, and the primary read progression is simply confirming run versus play-action at the snap, then getting your extra rushers to the correct gap before the ball carrier can hit the hole.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, look for a single high safety or two deep safeties splitting the field. A single high shell confirms the offense may be selling run action, which plays into your hand here. Watch running back alignment and offensive line splits. Tight splits with a fullback or extra blocker signal inside run, which is exactly what this blitz is built to stop. Post-snap, key the mesh point immediately. If the quarterback pulls the ball on an RPO read, your deep defenders need to widen quickly since the underneath threat is gone but crossing routes and slants can develop. This play struggles against play-action rollouts and boot concepts since the aggressive box crash leaves backside contain thin. If the offense runs stretch or outside zone, your interior gap defenders can overrun the play, so rely on your deep defenders to help funnel the ball carrier back inside.
Usage Tips
Call Engage Eight on run-heavy down and distance situations like second and short or first and ten when you expect inside zone, dive, or power runs.
Pre-snap, check the offensive personnel and backfield alignment. If you see two backs or heavy formations, this play is designed exactly for that look.
Because five defenders crash the box, user control one of the underneath defenders and spy the running back to prevent cutback lanes if the front gets sealed.
Mix this with Cover 3 and Cover 1 from the same Bear set so offenses cannot key on your run blitz tendency based on personnel alone.
Avoid calling this on clear passing downs since the three deep defenders leave underneath zones exposed to quick game and RPO slants.
