Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth and CB alignment, if the corners are showing hard outside leverage with a single high safety already rotated deep, the offense is likely diagnosing Cover 3 and will attack the flats or seams. Post-snap, key the underneath zone droppers, if they get out of their hook zones too fast chasing a crosser, that opens a throwing lane over the middle for digs and posts. This shell shuts down quick slants, hitches, and shallow crossers because the flat defenders and hook zones squeeze the short and intermediate windows. Watch for offenses stemming two receivers vertically into the same deep third, that stacks your deep defender and creates a natural throwing window for a skilled user under pressure. If you see a bunch or stack formation with immediate motion, be ready to user the deep middle defender since Cover 3 can be exploited by combination routes designed to flood one zone.

Use this against offenses that show two receiver bunch or stack looks since the flat defenders can wall off quick game and bubble screens before they develop.
Pre-snap, identify if the offense is in a spread formation that could isolate your underneath zone droppers in space, and consider audibling to Cover 1 if you see heavy trips or four verts stems.
Hot route the deep middle defender to widen if you diagnose a post or dig route coming from the slot, since Cover 3 is naturally vulnerable to seam throws between the deep thirds.
Pair this call with 46 Mid Blitz or LB Blitz 3 in your play-calling sequence to keep the offense guessing between a zone drop and a pressure look from the same Bear front alignment.
Best used on early downs or second and medium when you expect a mix of run and pass, since the Bear front personnel still threatens the run while dropping into this zone shell.
