Breakdown

HB Stretch out of Weak I Slot Flex is an outside zone run play with the offensive line flowing laterally to seal the edge while the fullback leads through the hole to pick off the first defender outside the tackle box. The diagram shows the HB taking a wide angle handoff and pressing the perimeter, reading blocks from the playside guard and tackle before deciding to bounce it outside or cut back inside against overpursuit. This is a pure run play designed to attack overaggressive fronts and gap-shooting defensive linemen, with the primary read being the fullback's kick out block followed by the edge defender's leverage.

Defensive Reads

Watch for defensive ends and outside linebackers crashing hard inside on the snap, since that opens the cutback lane behind the zone flow. Identify Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with safeties rotating late, as these shells often leave the edge defender in conflict between run fits and pass responsibilities. Key on the strong side force defender, usually the SAM linebacker or strong safety, to see if he is squeezing the fullback's kick out block or spilling it outside. Beware of user controlled defenders flowing hard to the sideline pre-snap, which signals the defense is selling out to stop the stretch and daring you to cut it back. This play struggles against gap exchange run blitzes and heavy fronts with a extra defender stacked over the play side tackle, since it removes the natural bounce lane on the edge.

Usage Tips

Attack light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box before the snap since this play relies on winning the edge rather than overpowering extra defenders. Use the fullback lead block as your visual key and stay patient behind him rather than rushing the cutback lane too early. Hot route the TE to a stalk block if you see the defense stacking the strong side to prevent an unblocked force defender from crashing the play. Pair this with Power O and HB Gut from the same Weak I Slot Flex set to keep the defense guessing between outside zone stretch and inside gap runs off identical formation looks. Best called on early downs, first and second and short to medium yardage, when defenses are more likely to sit in base fronts instead of nickel or dime sub packages.
