Power O out of Weak I Slot Flex is a gap scheme power run play that pulls the backside guard through the hole while the fullback leads through as a personal blocker for the HB. The diagram shows the offensive line blocking down at the point of attack with the fullback isolating on the play side linebacker, and the HB taking a slight lead step before hitting the hole behind the pulling guard. This is strictly a run play with no pass option, so the primary read progression is simply to press the hole, read the fullback's kick out or lead block, and decide whether to bounce outside or stay tight based on how the second level defenders flow.
Defensive Reads
Watch linebacker depth pre-snap; linebackers sitting tight to the line of scrimmage signal a run blitz that can blow up the pulling guard before he reaches the hole. Identify if the defense is in a 4-3 under or over front, since shifted fronts change which gap the fullback needs to seal and can leave the play side edge exposed. Key the play side defensive end's first step; if he crashes down hard to string the play out, be ready to bounce the HB outside the fullback's block. Look for safety rotation into the box on early downs, which often means the defense is selling out to stop inside runs and daring you to throw off play-action instead. Man coverage on the backside receivers combined with a stacked box is the biggest red flag, since it usually means extra numbers are coming to the point of attack.
Usage Tips
Run this on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) when the defense shows a light box with six or fewer defenders inside the tackles.
Check for an overloaded front pre-snap; if the defense stacks extra defenders to the play side, consider audibling to Counter F to attack the opposite edge with the same personnel.
Use manual control on the fullback if the CPU AI hesitates on picking up the play side linebacker, since a clean fullback block is essential to this play hitting for positive yardage.
Pair Power O with HB Gut and HB Stretch in the same drive to keep linebackers guessing on gap direction while staying in 21 personnel for consistent formation disguise.
Avoid calling this into heavy blitz looks with safeties crashing down pre-snap, since the extra hat can beat the puller before the fullback squares up his block.
