Dagger out of Weak I Slot Flex shows a classic vertical clear out concept on the play side. The outside receiver runs a deep vertical to occupy the corner and safety, the slot receiver runs the dagger dig underneath at intermediate depth, and the flex TE runs a shallow drag across the field. On the backside a receiver runs an out breaking route to hold the corner. This is a man and zone beater built to attack Cover 2 and Cover 3 by clearing space with the vertical route and settling the dig into the hole created behind the underneath defenders. The primary read progression starts with the vertical clear out, then works down to the dig, and the drag serves as the checkdown against pressure or if the dig window is closed.
Defensive Reads
Pre snap identify the deep safety count, two high safeties with soft corners signal Cover 2 or Cover 4 which invites the user to sit the flat defender and rob the dig throw. A single high safety with corners playing outside leverage points to Cover 3, in that case spy the curl to flat defender since he has to choose between the drag and the dig. Post snap watch for a user controlled linebacker sinking into the dig lane, that lurk defender is the biggest threat to this concept and forces the quarterback to hold the ball longer. Man coverage with the slot corner running vertically with the dagger route usually wins for the defense since there is no natural pick or rub to separate, jumping the underneath route early can bait a quick pass but exposes the defense if the quarterback resets to the vertical shot. Zone blitz calls that bring extra pressure while dropping a linebacker into the intermediate zone can disrupt timing on the dig, so disguised pressure with a delayed zone drop is one of the better answers to this play.
Usage Tips
Check the safety alignment pre snap, two deep safeties confirm Cover 2 which is exactly what this concept is designed to attack with the dig sitting behind the flat defender and in front of the deep half. Against Cover 3 look for the corner to bail deep, the vertical route should stress the deep third and open the dig window against the curl to flat defender. If you see man coverage indicators like a corner in press or safety shading over the slot, be ready to hot route the drag into a quick option since the dig can get grabbed in man concepts. Use this play on second and medium to second and long when defenses are more likely to sit in zone shells expecting a longer developing pass. Pair Dagger with Slot Drag or X Curl FB Flat in the same set so the defense has to respect both the vertical shot and the quick underneath game, keeping linebackers honest and unable to jump the dig route every snap.
