Read Option out of Shotgun Wing Tight Flip is a true zone read run play with 13 personnel on the field. The diagram shows the QB reading the backside edge defender off the RB mesh point, with the yellow path showing the QB pull lane and the red arrow showing the RB dive path into the line. This is a run play built to attack a light box, and the primary read is the backside defensive end: give on a crash, keep and work the edge if he stays home.
Key the backside defensive end at the snap since he is the direct read for the QB give or keep decision. Watch for a scrape exchange from the linebacker, this is the primary counter that shuts down the keep read. If the defense shows a heavy box with the safety walked down pre-snap, expect the give read to be taken away. User players should spy the QB with a linebacker or nickel defender rather than committing fully to the dive. Overloaded fronts and edge blitzes off the read side force an early give and limit the explosive keep potential.
Check the box count pre-snap and only trust the mesh read if the defense is in a 6 man box or lighter.
Use motion sparingly here since this look relies on the natural zone read numbers rather than misdirection.
If the CPU or user defender consistently crashes down on the RB, pull the ball every snap until they adjust.
Pair this with QB Zone and Inside Zone from the same set so the defense cannot key on run direction pre-snap.
Best used on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and medium) when defenses are still playing base run fits.
