QB Zone out of Shotgun Wing Tight Flip is a designed QB run built off inside zone blocking up front, with the offensive line flowing laterally to seal running lanes while the QB reads the zone flow and cuts up field. The lone wide receiver runs a vertical route to hold the deep defender and keep numbers in the box light, but the primary read is the QB following his zone blocking and picking the crease based on defensive flow. This is a run play designed to attack light boxes and gap integrity rather than a pass concept, making it a pure ground weapon in this set.
Pre-snap, count the box and check if the defense has rotated a safety down to add a run defender, since that is the biggest indicator this play should be checked out of. Watch linebacker depth and alignment: linebackers sitting tight to the line of scrimmage with no gap displacement are primed to blow this up if they diagnose zone flow quickly. Post-snap, key the play side defensive end and any user controlled defender crashing down the line, since a disciplined edge defender who stays home on the QB can kill the cutback lane. This run beats light boxes and defenses that bite on the vertical route, but it gets shut down by stacked fronts, aggressive gap-shooting blitzes, and spy techniques on the quarterback.
Check the box count before the snap and only call this against six or fewer defenders in the box since the QB is your extra blocker replacement. Use the vertical receiver to bait single high safeties into staying deep, which widens the running lane for the zone read. Pair this with Read Option and Inside Zone from the same set so the defense has to respect three different run looks off identical formation and personnel. Call QB Zone on early downs or short yardage third downs where defenses expect pass out of Shotgun Wing Tight Flip. Mix in QB Blast as a change up to keep linebackers from crashing too hard on the zone flow.
