Inside Zone out of Shotgun Wing Tight Flip is a straightforward zone run play designed to attack the interior gaps with a double team at the point of attack. The diagram shows the offensive line flowing in unison with the running back taking a downhill track off the zone blocking scheme, reading the initial double team before pressing to the correct gap based on flow from the defensive front. This is a run play, not a play-action or RPO look, so the primary read progression for the ball carrier starts at the frontside double team and works to the backside cutback lane if the frontside gets clogged.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is in a base 4-3 or 3-4 front since heavier fronts with extra linebackers will clog the interior gaps this play attacks. Watch safety depth before the snap: a single high safety cheating down into the box signals run support and makes this play tougher to execute for big gains. Post-snap, key the defensive tackles and middle linebacker flow, since a fast-flowing linebacker crashing downhill opens the cutback lane for the running back. This play struggles against gap or odd-stack fronts with a plugged nose tackle, since that alignment clogs the frontside double team before it develops. Look out for a user-controlled linebacker sitting in the A-gap or B-gap pre-snap, since that is a strong sign the human defender is anticipating inside zone and will try to blow it up at the mesh point.
Usage Tips
Use this play on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage to keep defenses honest and prevent them from selling out on the pass.
Check the box count before the snap: if the defense has six or more in the box, consider audibling to a pass concept from this set like Y-Spot or Flood Trail instead.
Take manual control of the running back and press the play side hole first, then be ready to bounce it back to the cutback lane if the linebackers flow too hard downhill.
Pair this run with Read Option or QB Zone from the same set so the defense has to respect both the give and the quarterback keeper, which slows down linebacker pursuit.
Against aggressive gap-shooting defensive tackles, use this play early in a series to set up play-action shots off similar formation and personnel later in the drive.
