Breakdown

Sprint Z Spot is a play-action rollout concept out of Shotgun Trio 4wr Str that pulls the quarterback outside the pocket toward the Z receiver side while the offensive line slides protection to match the flow. The route combo features a spot concept with a hitch, a flat route, and an under route working underneath, creating a natural triangle read for the rolling quarterback against both man and zone coverage. The primary read progression starts with the flat route as the first option, then works to the spot or hitch, and finishes with the under route crossing back underneath as the outlet against pursuing defenders.

Defensive Reads

Identify the flat defender pre-snap. If a linebacker or slot corner is sitting outside in a hard zone flat, the flat route will be taken away and the quarterback should progress to the spot route immediately. Watch for Cover 3 sink or Cover 4 match shells since the underneath spot concept is designed to exploit the soft zone in front of the cornerback drop, sitting down right behind the flat defender and in front of the deep third or quarter defender. Key the middle linebacker depth after the snap. If he sinks hard into the throwing lane on the sprint side, the under route crossing back underneath becomes the checkdown against a lurking user defender. Beware of blitz packages that bring pressure off the edge toward the rollout direction, since sprint action limits the quarterback's ability to escape backside if the edge is not accounted for in protection. Against man coverage with an aggressive slot blitz, the spot route sitting down at the sticks is the quickest answer, but a disciplined user linebacker who stays home on the initial flat read can bait the quarterback into a contested throw.

Usage Tips

Use this play on third and short to medium distance since the spot concept is designed to move the sticks quickly underneath zone coverage.

Check the flat defender before the snap. If the corner or slot defender sits low and outside, the flat route will be covered and you should look to the spot route sitting down in the void.

Roll with the quarterback using the sprint action to buy extra time and create throwing lanes outside the tackle box, especially against interior pressure or a nano blitz up the middle.

Pair this play with Slants or Short Posts from the same set to keep the defense honest on quick game reads, then mix in Sprint Z Spot to attack the same underneath zones with horizontal stretch instead of vertical stems.

Against man coverage, hot route the under route to a quick out or speed out if the linebacker covering it has tight man technique, since the rollout timing favors quick separation rather than a long developing crosser.
