Dagger is a classic man beater built off the trio bunch look in Shotgun Trio 4wr Str, pairing a deep dig from the inside slot receiver with a vertical clear out route from the outside receiver on the same side. The clear out occupies the deep half or the outside corner, opening the void underneath for the dig to settle in the middle of the field against man or off man coverage. Blocking is standard pass protection with no play-action or RPO elements attached, so the primary read progression starts with the deep dig at 12 to 15 yards, then works down to the underneath crosser or check down out of the backfield if the window is closed.
Read the cornerback depth pre-snap, tight press man alignment on the outside receiver signals the clear out will win space for the dig to work underneath Watch for a single high safety rotating late, if he stays home in the middle of the field he can jump the dig route and turn it into a pick six Identify linebacker depth at the snap, shallow linebackers sitting at 5 to 7 yards can undercut the dig if they read the quarterback's eyes quickly This play struggles against a two high shell with disciplined zone drops since the dig has to fit into a tighter window between the flat defender and the deep safety Watch for user controlled lurk defenders sinking into the throwing lane, if the defense shows Tampa 2 or a robber technique bail out to the checkdown instead of forcing the dig throw
Look at the safety alignment pre-snap to confirm this is a single high or two high shell before snapping since Dagger thrives against man coverage with a single high safety cheating over the top
Motion the backside receiver if available to help identify man versus zone before the snap, then commit to the dig read immediately if you see man leverage
Hot route the checkdown or flare route to the flat if you are getting pressure up the middle, this gives you a quick outlet against blitz heavy defenses
Pair this play in sequence with China N Go or Four Verticals from the same set to keep defenders honest on the deep middle, forcing user controlled safeties to guess between the dig and the vertical shot
Use Dagger on second and long or third and medium situations where defenses are more likely to sit in man coverage to protect against the run, since the dig route naturally sits down in the void that man defenders struggle to close
