Read Option out of Trio 4wr Str is a Shotgun run-option play built around a zone blocking scheme with the QB reading the edge defender to decide between handing off or pulling the ball. With four wide receivers spread across the formation, the box is naturally lightened, giving the offensive line favorable numbers against base fronts. The primary read progression is the QB keying the play side defensive end or the widest edge threat: give the ball on an inside zone track if that defender crashes down, or keep it and attack the alley if he stays home to take the handoff.
Watch the play side defensive end or edge defender at the snap, if he sits and reads the QB rather than crashing hard, expect the keep and pursue outside contain. Identify the middle linebacker depth pre-snap, a shaded or downhill linebacker signals a run blitz that can beat this play before the mesh point develops. Look for user-controlled defenders spying the QB, a spy or lurk defender sitting in the option lane is the biggest counter to the keep read. Check safety alignment, a single high safety shell with the box loaded is a strong indicator the defense is selling out to stop the option, favor the give in that look. Against Cover 2 or Cover 3 shells with light boxes, this play excels since the extra defender is dropped into coverage rather than filling run support.
Check the box count before the snap, if the defense has six or more in the box, consider audibling into a hot route pass instead since the numbers favor the defense against the run.
Use this play on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) to stay ahead of the sticks while keeping the defense honest against your pass-heavy set.
Motion a receiver across the formation pre-snap to bait linebackers into rotating, this can widen running lanes or reveal blitz intentions before the snap.
