Defensive Reads

Watch the play side linebacker or slot defender at the snap, since their run fit versus pass drop is the actual RPO key that determines whether the quarterback hands off or throws. Zone shells with linebackers sitting flat footed in read mode instead of crashing hard are more vulnerable, since the peek route sits right behind their eyes. Man coverage with tight press on the peek target and a linebacker spying the quarterback shuts this down, since there is no natural window for the peek and the run lane gets clogged. Post-snap, look for a user controlled defender jumping the peek route lane early, since that lurk timing tells you whether the defense is baiting the RPO read or genuinely committing to the run fit.

Hot route the peek receiver into a quicker breaking route against man coverage looks if you see a corner shaded tight on the slot defender.
Call this on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage, since defenses respect the run threat and are more likely to bite on the zone action.
