HB Quick Base is a designed dive run out of the Shotgun Tight Slot Open formation with 11 personnel. The diagram shows the running back taking a downhill handoff and attacking the interior gap behind the center and guard, with the offensive line stepping forward to seal the point of attack. This is a pure run play with no read option or RPO element attached, designed to punish light boxes and overaggressive defensive fronts by hitting the hole quickly before linebackers can flow. The primary read progression is one cut: identify the first open crease at the line of scrimmage and get vertical, trusting the double team up front to move the front seven.
Defensive Reads
Watch for a stacked box with eight or more defenders at the line, this is the clearest sign to abandon Quick Base and check to a pass concept instead. Linebacker depth is key, if the mike and will are sitting shallow and creeping toward the line pre-snap they are keying run and will fill the dive lane fast. Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells with the safeties staying deep tend to leave lighter boxes, making this an efficient run call against those shells. Post-snap, track whether the defensive tackles are shooting gaps aggressively (a common nano blitz counter), since this can blow up the dive before the back reaches the line. User-controlled defenders spying the backfield or crashing down hard from depth signal that the defense anticipated the run, so mix in play-action rollouts or PA Read from this set to punish that aggression.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and only run this into 6 or fewer defenders in the box to avoid a numbers disadvantage.
Use this against defenses that show soft or two high safety shells since the extra run defender usually gets pulled out of the box.
Pair HB Quick Base with RPO Peek Slant and RPO Zone Peek from the same set so defenses cannot sit on the run without opening up quick throws behind them.
Run this on early downs like first and ten or second and short to stay ahead of the chains and keep the offense balanced.
Use manual control on the fullback or blocking tight end if available to seal an extra gap defender when the defense loads the box late.
