DBL Hook Wheel out of Shotgun Tight Slot Open sends the backside receiver on a deep crossing route to clear space while the backside TE releases on a wheel route up the sideline off a hook fake, creating a natural pick and leverage situation. On the play side, the slot receiver runs a shallow drag under a hook route sitting down in the middle of the field, giving the quarterback a layered high low read against zone drops. This is a man beater at its core, using the wheel to exploit linebackers or slower defenders in man coverage while the hook and drag combo gives a quick answer versus zone shells.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment, single high shells are vulnerable to the wheel route beating man coverage down the sideline. Watch the linebacker assigned to the TE, if he bites on the hook fake or gets picked off by the crossing route, the wheel is wide open. Cover 3 and Cover 4 zone shells with disciplined deep defenders can shut down the wheel by sinking and staying over the top. Look for user controlled defenders lurking in the shallow zone, they can jump the drag or hook route if the quarterback stares it down too long. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge pressure the quarterback before the wheel fully develops, so check protection and hot route the drag as a quick outlet.
Usage Tips
Attack the wheel route when you diagnose man coverage pre-snap, especially if a linebacker or slot corner is matched up on the TE running the wheel.
Use the drag and hook combo on the play side as your first read against zone coverage, working the ball underneath before pushing deep.
Motion the slot receiver pre-snap to help identify man versus zone based on whether the defense shifts or a defender follows across the formation.
Pair this play with RPO Peek Slant or RPO Zone Peek earlier in a series to bait linebackers into cheating up, then hit the wheel over the top once they bite.
Best called on second or third and medium when you have a clean pocket and time to let the wheel route develop up the sideline.
