Breakdown
Texas out of Shotgun Split Twins is a pass concept built off a route combo to the trips side with a shallow drag/flat combo away from it. The near receiver runs a flat route while the outside receiver runs a deep out that breaks toward the sideline, creating a high low stretch on the flat defender, and the single receiver away from the concept runs a deep vertical to hold the safety. The lone back or slot defender marked in red releases on a check release into the flat area on the play side, giving the quarterback a built in dump off option if the deeper routes are covered. This is a man beater concept designed to attack underneath defenders with picks and spacing, with the primary read starting on the vertical shot before working down to the deep out and finally the flat/check release option underneath.
Defensive Reads
Pre snap, check for two high safeties versus single high, a single high shell means the deep out and vertical are live and you need to rob the trips side with a user defender. Watch the flat defender's depth at the snap, if he sits too deep the flat route underneath will be wide open for an easy completion. Against zone coverage, key the outside linebacker or slot corner responsible for the deep out zone, if he sinks too far he leaves the underneath flat uncovered. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is vulnerable to the deep vertical route, so a user controlled deep safety needs to be ready to help over the number one receiver on that side. Blitz heavy fronts can rush the quarterback before the deep routes develop, so if you see extra rushers threatening the edge, sit a linebacker in the shallow zone to take away the checkdown and force a bad throw.
Usage Tips
Look at the safety alignment pre snap, if you see a single high safety shaded to the trips side you have a green light to take the deep vertical shot on the backside. Use the flat route as your checkdown against Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells where the corner sinks deep and the flat defender has to choose between the out route and the flat route. Motion the check release back to identify man versus zone before the snap, if he gets covered in man coverage across the formation that confirms man across the board. This play pairs well with Corners in this set since both attack similar leverage points, so mix them to keep defenders guessing on which way the ball is going. Best used on second and medium to long or third and medium situations where the defense is more likely to play zone drops and give you the space underneath to work the sticks.
