HB Off Tackle out of Shotgun Split Twins lines up with two receivers stacked wide left, a tight bunch to the right, and the HB offset in the backfield. This is a designed run play that attacks the off tackle hole with the offensive line blocking down and the play side tackle and TE sealing the edge for the HB to follow. There is no route progression to read since this is a pure run concept, so the primary read is the play side hole and whether the linebacker fills or the edge stays sealed for the cutback lane.
Defensive Reads
Watch for the play side defensive end and outside linebacker crashing down hard, since that opens a cutback lane behind the block. Stacked fronts with a linebacker walked up over the tackle can blow up this run before it develops, so avoid this call against heavy fronts. User controlled defenders flying downhill on run action are the biggest threat, so key whether the defense is spying the HB pre-snap. Cover 3 and Cover 1 shells with an extra man in the box shut this down quickly, look for single high safety alignment as a warning sign. If the linebackers show blitz indicators or walk up to the line pre-snap, expect a nano blitz package designed to stop the edge before the HB can turn the corner.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and only run HB Off Tackle into light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box.
Use your fullback or lead blocker if the personnel allows it to help clear the alley defender before you commit to the hole.

Mix in Inside Zone Split from this set on early downs to keep linebackers guessing between gap schemes and zone schemes.
Run this on second and short or first and ten when the defense shows base personnel, since heavier fronts with extra linebackers close the off tackle lane quickly.
