Corners out of Shotgun Split Twins is a vertical shot play built to attack the sideline with double corner routes from the two outside receivers, while the slot receiver runs a quick out and an inline TE releases up the seam before breaking outward. The backfield shows a check release protection look, giving the quarterback a clean pocket to climb through as the double corners stretch the deep boundary. This is a man beater at its core, using the corner breaks to create separation against trailing defenders, with the primary read progression starting outside to the widest corner route, working down to the intermediate corner from the slot side, and using the flat out route underneath as the checkdown against a hard outside jam.
Defensive Reads
Check for single high safety alignment pre-snap, since Cover 1 and Cover 3 leave the outside corner route on an island against man coverage. Watch cornerback depth at the snap, soft corners bailing early open passing lanes underneath while tight press alignment signals a jam that can disrupt the corner release. Identify user controlled safeties rotating late, a lurking safety sitting on the corner route breakpoint is the biggest threat to this concept. Look for two deep safeties splitting the field, since Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells force you to rely on the underneath flat route instead of the deep corners. Read linebacker drop speed, a fast scraping linebacker into the seam can undercut the TE route before it clears the second level.
Usage Tips
Take a pre-snap look at the corner alignment before the snap, since press corners with no safety help over the top get beaten easily by the outside corner route.
Use the flat route from the slot receiver as your quick answer against Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells that sit deep and take away the corner routes.
Hot route the TE into a seam sit or drag if you see linebackers dropping into passing lanes that clog the middle read.
Call this on second and long or third and medium situations where you need a chunk gain and are willing to test single high safety looks.
