Inside Zone Split is a straightforward zone run play out of Shotgun Split Twins with 21 personnel, showing two receivers stacked vertically on the outside while the offensive line executes a zone blocking scheme up front. The fullback or lead blocker crosses to the play side to seal off the edge, and the running back takes a mesh point handoff before reading his blocks and picking a run lane based on the flow of the defensive line. This is a pure run play with no play-action or RPO elements attached, and the primary read progression starts with the frontside double team at the point of attack before bouncing to the backside cutback lane if the play side gets clogged.
Watch linebacker depth before the snap, if the mike and will are sitting shallow at five yards or less they can trigger fast and blow up the inside lanes. Identify whether the defense is running a 3-4 odd front with a nose tackle head up on the center, this alignment can clog the initial rush lane and force an early bounce. Key the fullback's block on the edge defender, if he loses that block the play side gets sealed off and the cutback becomes mandatory. Look for a linebacker blitz through the A or B gap pre-snap, if the second level shows an unblocked defender crashing downhill this play can lose yardage quickly. Check for user-controlled defenders sitting in the hole (a lurk or spy), since a disciplined user can read the mesh point and fill the cutback lane before the back gets there.
Run this play against base 4-3 or 4-2-5 fronts where the linebackers are stacked tight and have not widened out to respect outside run threats.
Check the box count before the snap: if the defense has six or fewer defenders in the box, this play has a numbers advantage and should hit for consistent gains.
Use the fullback or lead blocker as your key, take the user-controlled defender out of the play by blocking him early, then let the running back read the natural cutback lane.
Pair this play with HB Off Tackle and Texas from the same set to keep defenders guessing between inside zone, outside zone, and misdirection looks.
Best called on early downs (first and second) to stay ahead of the chains and set up play-action rollouts like PA F Slide later in the series.
