Mtn HB Cross Screen is a running back screen out of Shotgun Normal Wing Pats Close designed to bait aggressive pass rushers and blitz calls. The offensive line initially shows pass protection before releasing to set a wall of blockers on the perimeter as the halfback works laterally across the field to catch the screen in space. This is a screen play built to counter man and zone blitzes, and the primary read is simply getting the ball to the halfback and trusting the blocking numbers to spring him into open grass before second level defenders can react.
Identify blitz packages pre snap by checking linebacker depth and edge rusher alignment, since overloaded fronts and nano blitzes are exactly what this screen is designed to punish. Watch for a defensive lineman or linebacker assigned to spy or sit, since a disciplined defender reading screen can blow this play up before the wall forms. Man coverage with linebackers turning their backs to chase receivers downfield opens up huge running lanes for the halfback once he catches the ball. Zone shells with underneath defenders staying square and reading the quarterback are the biggest counter, especially if a user controlled linebacker stays home and jumps the flat. Cover 0 and all out pressure calls are the best matchup for this play since there is no help defender left to react to the screen release.
Call this on early downs or after you have shown consistent dropback passing to condition the defense into rushing the passer aggressively.
Check for blitz indicators pre snap such as linebackers creeping to the line or safeties rotating down, since this play thrives against pressure that overruns the play.
Hold the ball for a half second longer than feels natural to let your offensive line get out in front and establish the screen wall before releasing to the halfback.
Pair this call with Mtn PA Cross or RPO Alert Mtn Bubble earlier in a series so the defense has to respect both the deep play action shot and the quick game, making the screen hit even harder when they sell out on those looks.
