Y Slot Choice comes out of the Shotgun Empty Sketch Stack with 11 personnel, spreading five receivers across the formation. The left X runs a corner route up the sideline, the inline slot works a quick slant up the seam on a choice route, and the right side stacks a hitch to flat that breaks vertically up the numbers. With no running back in the backfield to check release, this is a pure man beater against empty coverage, attacking leverage on both boundaries while the choice route reads the underneath defender to sit or break outside. Primary progression starts with the choice route in the middle read against man or off coverage, then works to the boundary corner route on the left if the slot is capped.
Watch the slot defender at the snap, if he sits low and inside the choice route will break outside so close that throwing window fast with a user defender. Key the single high safety, if he rotates hard to the boundary corner route the middle choice route becomes wide open against man coverage. Identify blitz packages pre-snap by counting box defenders, since Empty formations often trigger nano blitzes and this concept has no check release to pick up extra rushers. If the defense shows a two high shell with corners playing off, the choice route will likely be forced to sit short, so users should jump the underneath break with a linebacker or slot corner. Look for a robber or lurk defender sitting in the middle third, this is the primary defender that erases the choice read and forces the quarterback to the boundary corner route instead.
Pre-snap, check for man coverage indicators like a single high safety with corners in press since the choice route thrives against man leverage.
Motion the stack receiver on the right pre-snap to diagnose if the defense follows in man or stays put in zone, this confirms your coverage shell before the snap.
Hot route the underneath choice receiver to a hard slant if you see a linebacker sitting in a shallow zone, this gives you an instant answer against zone drops.
Use this play on second and medium or third and short since the choice route gives a built in answer against both man and zone without needing a full field read.
Pair this with Verticals TE Option in the same set to keep the defense honest on vertical shots, then come back to Y Slot Choice to punish any overcommitted safety rotation.
