Post In Angle Slant is a trips-side stack concept out of Shotgun Empty Sketch Stack that isolates a two-man crossing action to the strong side while a single receiver runs a quick angle route to the weak side. The stacked receivers create a natural rub, with one working an in-breaking post that crosses the field and the other sitting down on an in route underneath, while the lone weak side receiver runs a sharp angle out of the backfield alignment for a quick outlet. This is a man beater built off the stack rub to gain separation against press or trail technique, with the primary read progressing from the angle route as the initial hot outlet, then to the underneath in, and finally to the deep crossing post if the middle of the field opens up.
Defensive Reads
Watch for a single high safety pre-snap, since that usually signals man coverage underneath and tells you the stack rub concept will create easy separation. If the cornerback aligned on the stack receivers is playing outside leverage, expect the post route to break open once it clears the rub. Key the flat defender's depth at the snap, since a shallow flat drop will jump the angle route and take away your first read. Look for a linebacker spying or blitzing off the edge, which can disrupt the timing on the in route and force an early check down to the angle route. Two high safety shells with disciplined zone drops are the best answer to this play, since they can rob the crossing post and force the quarterback into the underneath options only.
Usage Tips
Attack man coverage first since the stack alignment creates a natural rub that forces defenders to fight through traffic, giving you a clean look at the in route or the crossing post.
Use the angle route as your pre-snap safety valve against blitz looks, since it releases quickly and gives you a built-in check down if the protection breaks down.
Against zone shells, hot route the underneath in receiver into a deeper crossing route or hold him to sit in the void between the flat and hook defenders for a more effective zone beater.
This play works well on second and medium or third and short since the quick-developing angle route and in route give you multiple options that convert easily.
