RPO Alert Slant is a run-pass option built off the Duo blocking scheme out of Shotgun Duo Offset, giving the quarterback a pre-snap and post-snap alert to throw a quick slant instead of handing the ball off. The offensive line executes zone/duo run blocking to hold the run threat, while the alerted receiver runs a hard slant that attacks the void behind blitzing linebackers or in front of soft zone corners. The primary read progression is run key first: identify the second level defender (usually a linebacker or slot defender) triggering downhill on run action, then pull and throw the slant immediately if he steps up, or hand off if he sits or drops into the throwing lane.
Check linebacker depth pre-snap, since stacked or crashing linebackers create the throwing window for the slant while gap-sound linebackers who stay square kill the alert. Watch for Cover 3 or Cover 1 with aggressive run support, both of which get exposed because the underneath defender bites on run fakes and vacates the slant lane. Match zone coverage with sitting linebackers or a nickel defender who stays in his zone drop, since a disciplined defender who does not bite on the run fake takes away the throw and forces you to hand off into a loaded box. Watch for user-controlled defenders sitting in a lurk spot near the slant window, since a smart human player will bait the run fake and jump the route, so use eye manipulation before committing to the throw. Look out for interior blitzes and nano blitz packages, which can beat the Duo blocking before the quarterback even gets through his run key, making a quick pre-snap decision to throw the alert immediately essential.
Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the box count to confirm whether the defense is stacked to stop Duo, since a light box favors the run and a crowded box favors the alert throw.
Key the alerted defender before the snap, most often a linebacker or nickel defender aligned over the slant target, and decide your trigger point before the ball is snapped so you are not hesitating post-snap.
This play punishes aggressive run fits and blitz-heavy linebacker corps, so call it on early downs (first and ten, second and short) when defenses are cheating up to stop Duo runs from earlier reps.
Pair this with Inside Zone and HB Punch earlier in a series to condition the defense to bite on run action, then hit the slant alert once linebackers start flying downhill.
Mix in RPO Alert Bubble and RPO Alert HB Flat from the same set to keep the defense guessing on which alert route is live, forcing hesitation in run fits and linebacker reads.
