RPO Alert Bubble is a run-pass option built off Duo Offset action, giving the quarterback a pre-snap or snap read between the inside zone handoff and a bubble screen to the slot receiver. The offensive line and running back sell the Duo blocking scheme downhill, occupying the second level while the bubble route pulls the alley defender or nickel corner out to the flat. The primary read progression starts with the alerted defender closest to the bubble, if that defender sits inside or crashes on run action, pull and throw the bubble immediately, if he widens or sinks with the bubble receiver, hand the ball off and let the Duo blocking work.
Key the alert defender pre-snap, typically the slot corner or overhang linebacker responsible for the bubble receiver. Against man coverage with no underneath help, the bubble often wins immediately due to natural leverage and blocking numbers. Zone coverages with a flat defender sitting at depth or squatting on the bubble route shut this down and force the quarterback to hand the ball off. Watch for crashing defensive ends or linebackers keying run action, since that aggressive fill triggers the pass option and opens the bubble. Be wary of user-controlled defenders spying the running back or jumping the bubble lane, since a smart user can bait the quarterback into a bad read.
Pre-snap, identify the defender aligned over or near the bubble receiver since he is your alert key for the entire play.
Use this against defenses that show run blitz fits or crashing linebackers, since the bubble instantly punishes overaggressive fronts.
Hot route the backside receiver into a quick slant or hitch if you expect man coverage, giving you a second option if the bubble defender sits at depth.
Run this on early downs or third and short to keep defenses honest against both the Duo run and the quick perimeter throw.
Pair this with Inside Zone and HB Punch from the same set to condition the defense to respect the run, then hit the bubble when linebackers start flowing hard downhill.
Avoid throwing the bubble into two-high shells with a flat defender sitting at five yards or deeper, since that defender can jump the route before it develops.
