Jet HB Punch is a run play out of Shotgun Duo Offset that uses jet motion across the backfield to influence the defense before the ball is snapped. The jet motion man threatens an edge sweep while the HB gets the actual handoff on a Punch concept, hitting a gap behind zone or gap blocking up front designed to seal the edge and create a downhill lane. This is a run play, not a play-action or RPO, and the primary read progression starts with the playside double team or combo block, then bounces to the backside cutback lane if the playside gap is clogged.
Watch linebacker depth and flow at the snap, if they crash hard toward the jet motion side you have a clean cutback lane waiting on the backside. Check the defensive line alignment before the snap, a shaded nose or 3 technique to the playside gap can clog the primary running lane and force an early bounce read. Man coverage shells with linebackers keying the backfield tend to overreact to the jet motion, giving the HB more room on the actual handoff. Stacked box looks with a safety cheating down are the biggest threat to this play since it removes the natural cutback space and forces the HB into contact quicker. User controlled defenders spying the jet man out of the backfield can blow up the play design, so avoid calling this against defenses that consistently show a spy or contain defender crashing the motion.
Use the jet motion as a pre-snap disguise tool to bait linebackers into flowing with the sweep fake, which opens up the actual handoff lane behind the Punch blocking scheme.
Call this on early downs like first and second and short to medium yardage situations where defenses are more likely to sit in base run fits instead of stacking the box.
If the defense shows a jet sweep flow key with linebackers overplaying the motion, take the cutback lane immediately instead of forcing the play to the playside gap.
Pair this with Jet Touch Pass and RPO Alert Bubble from the same set so the defense has to respect the jet motion as a real perimeter threat, which slows down linebacker triggers on Jet HB Punch itself.
Mix in Jet PA HB Seam and Inside Zone in the same drive to keep linebackers guessing between run fits and playaction reads, making Jet HB Punch hit even harder once defenders start cheating downhill.
