HB Punch out of Shotgun Duo Offset is a downhill gap run built off duo blocking principles, sending the HB directly through the point of attack behind double team combo blocks at the point of contact. This is a run play, not a pass concept, so there are no route progressions to read: your primary read is the play side double team and the first unblocked defender at the second level. The line fires off the ball with a vertical push scheme, and the back's job is to press the hole, read the double team displacement, and cut off the block of the first defender who tries to fill.
Pre-snap, identify the number of defenders in the box: light boxes with six or fewer defenders are where HB Punch hits hardest, while stacked eight man fronts should push you toward a pass or RPO check. Watch safety alignment before the snap: a two high shell that rotates down late is a sign the defense is trying to disguise run support, so be ready for a fast flowing linebacker. Post-snap, key the play side linebacker's first step: if he reads the double team and flows immediately, expect the cutback lane to open behind the double team's displacement. User-controlled defenders sitting in the hole or spying the mesh point can blow this play up, so if you see a user linebacker crashing down pre-snap, consider an audible. Man beater blitz packages that send extra rushers off the edge do not directly stop HB Punch since it attacks inside gaps, but a strong interior nano blitz timed to the snap can beat the double team before it forms, so watch for defensive tackles shooting gaps immediately at the snap.
Use HB Punch on early downs, especially first and second and short to medium, when the defense shows a light box or a two high shell that signals fewer run defenders in the tackle box.
Check the linebacker depth pre-snap: if the Mike and Sam are sitting shallow and stacked tight, they can beat the double team to the second level, so consider audibling to Speed Option or Jet HB Punch instead.
Pair HB Punch with RPO Alert Slant or RPO Alert Bubble in your play-calling sequence so the defense has to respect both the downhill run and the quick RPO throw off the same backfield action.
If the defense loads the box with an extra safety or shows a run blitz look, motion pre-snap or check to Inside Zone from the same formation to attack a different track and keep the defense honest.
Once you have hit HB Punch a few times, sequence in PA Rollout or Jet PA HB Seam to capitalize on linebackers and safeties flowing hard downhill in anticipation of the run.
