Sit Z Drag out of Shotgun Box HB Strong shows a five man route concept with no protection help from the backfield, making it a pure pass attack rather than a play-action or RPO look. The backside receiver runs a deep vertical to clear the top of the defense while the near receiver on that side sits down on a curl/settle route working underneath. On the strong side, the outside receiver pushes vertical up the sideline to stretch the defense deep, the TE or slot runs a drag across the middle of the field at a shallow depth, and the HB releases outside on a short flat/out route. This is a natural zone beater built around the drag and sit combo creating a horizontal stretch on underneath defenders, with the primary read progression starting on the Z drag working across the field, then working back to the sit route if the drag is taken away, and using the flat route from the HB as your outlet against pressure or blitz looks.
Defensive Reads
Watch linebacker depth at the snap since shallow drops signal underneath zone coverage that the sit route can exploit. Key the cornerback over the drag route: if he sinks with the crosser in man coverage, expect the quarterback to check it down late or move to the sit route instead. Identify single high versus two deep safety shells pre-snap, since single high leaves the deep vertical routes more vulnerable to a spot drop from the safety. Look for a user controlled defender lurking in the shallow middle zone, as this is the primary threat to the Z drag and can bait a risky throw. Disguised blitzes that bring an extra rusher off the edge attack this play hardest since there is minimal protection help, so watch for late linebacker or defensive back blitz creep before the snap.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion or a defender count on the strong side to confirm if you are facing zone or man coverage before the snap.
If you see two deep safeties in a shell, trust the sit route to settle into the soft spot behind underneath zone defenders and in front of the safety.
Against man coverage, prioritize the Z drag immediately since the crossing action creates natural separation versus man defenders trailing from depth.
Hot route the HB into a quick option or flat route if you diagnose a blitz pre-snap, giving yourself an immediate outlet against pressure.
Pair this play with Inside Zone and HB Draw from the same set to keep linebackers honest, then come back to Sit Z Drag once the defense starts sitting on the run fake.
