Spacing out of Shotgun 5WR Tight shows a horizontal stretch concept with three receivers to the field side and two receivers to the boundary. The outside receivers on the field side run shallow curls that settle at roughly five and ten yards while the inside slot pushes vertical before working outside, creating a high low horizontal ladder across the underneath zones. To the boundary the two receivers run a quick out and a deep comeback, giving the QB a simple flat read away from the trips side. This is a classic zone beater built to attack Cover 3 and Cover 4 by settling receivers in the soft spots between zone defenders, with the primary read starting on the trips side curl to flat ladder before working back to the boundary comeback if the underneath defenders sit on the shorter routes.
As the defense, key the trips side curl to flat ladder first since that is the offense's primary progression and where most user driven throws will go. Play your underneath zone defenders with disciplined depth, sitting between the curl and flat routes to bait the QB into a tight window throw you can jump. Watch for the boundary comeback route as a secondary answer, so keep a safety or corner with deep help on that side to prevent a big chunk play. Bring a lurk defender or spy underneath on the trips side to rob the curl route, which is the most likely first read against zone coverage. If you disguise Cover 3 into a man blitz look presnap, this route concept struggles badly since the routes are designed to settle in zone windows rather than separate from man defenders.
Presnap identify whether the defense is showing three deep or four deep shell since Spacing thrives against both Cover 3 and Cover 4 zone drops.
Start your primary read on the trips side and work the curl to flat ladder from outside in, letting the defender's zone drop dictate which level you throw.
If the defense shows man coverage presnap consider audibling into Mesh or Mesh Post from this same set since Spacing is not designed to beat tight man leverage.
Use Spacing on early downs to move the chains with easy completions underneath, then sequence into Z Spot or Slot Dig Wide Corner later in the drive to attack the same underneath zones with high low crossers once the defense starts jumping the curls.
On third and short to medium distance, hot route the boundary comeback into a quick out if you see a corner blitz coming off the edge to get the ball out fast.
