Mtn Double Post is a man beater built around a pair of stacked post routes designed to overload one half of the field and create natural rub separation against man coverage. The double post concept forces MEG or press corners to fight through traffic, while underneath crossers and a flat route occupy linebackers and hold safeties in the middle of the field. Your primary read progression starts with the deep post pair (near-side post to far-side post) working to the middle read (dig or crosser) if the posts are taken away, then checks down to the flat route as your outlet against pressure.
Identify single high safety alignment pre-snap, if the free safety sits in the deep middle without help he has to choose which post to cover, leaving the other wide open. Check corner depth and technique, press or MEG man corners are the primary target since the post stack creates natural traffic that beats trail technique. Post-snap, watch for a robber or lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field, this user-controlled defender can jump the shorter post or the crossing route if the quarterback stares it down too long. This concept struggles against Cover 4 or Cover 6 shells with two deep safeties, since the extra deep defender can help over the top on both post routes. Also watch for a Cover 3 buzz rotation where a safety drops late into the deep middle, this disguised coverage can bait a throw into a trap zone right where the post routes converge.
Look for single high safety shells like Cover 1 or Cover 3 pre-snap since the double post stack is designed to stress one deep defender who cannot cover both posts. If you see two deep safeties in Cover 2 or Cover 4, hot route one post into a corner route or throw the underneath crosser instead since the safety help will squeeze both posts. Motion a receiver pre-snap to identify man versus zone, if the defender follows across the formation you have a man beater matchup to exploit. Best used on second and medium or third and long when you need an explosive gain over the middle against aggressive man coverage. Pair this play with Mesh Post or Slot Dig Wide Corner in your play-calling sequence to keep the defense guessing between shallow crossers and deep post shots, then come back to Mtn Double Post once they start jumping the shallow routes.
