Salem Smash Under is a Cover 2 beater out of Shotgun 5WR Tight that stretches the defense vertically and horizontally with a five man route concept. The backside receiver runs a deep corner route to attack the flat/deep quarter defender while the three inside receivers work an under concept, with two shallow crossers sitting under a dig/curl route and the closest receiver running a short hitch. The primary read progression starts with the deep corner route against Cover 2 to see if the safety bites, then works down to the crossing routes underneath for the easy completion against soft zone coverage.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing two deep safeties, which signals Cover 2 or Cover 4 and opens up the underneath crossing routes for easy yardage. Watch the flat defender or cornerback on the boundary receiver: if he sinks too deep to help on the corner route, the shallow crosser will be wide open underneath him. Post-snap, key the underneath linebackers and their zone drops, since a sluggish or misaligned linebacker drop leaves a soft window for the dig/curl route to settle into. Against man coverage, look for a lurking safety or nickel defender sitting in the shallow crossing lanes, as a user controlled defender jumping the under routes can undercut the entire concept. This play struggles against aggressive Cover 3 sky or Cover 1 robber looks with a deep middle defender who can rob the crossing routes and disrupt the timing of the concept.
Usage Tips
Use this play on second or third and short to medium situations where defenses often sit in Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells to prevent big plays. Pre-snap, check the safety alignment: if both safeties are deep and off the ball, the corner route has a strong chance to win over the top if the CB is playing hard flat responsibility. If linebackers show blitz or walk up into the box, hot route the shallow crossers to sit down quicker for a rhythm throw. Pair this play with Smash Dagger or Slot Dig Wide Corner in your call sheet to keep defenses guessing between vertical shots and underneath sit routes off the same formation look. Against man coverage, prioritize the crossing routes since the natural picks created by the under concept will spring receivers open against tight man coverage.
