Breakdown

Smash Dagger out of Shotgun 5WR Tight pairs a boundary smash concept with a field side dagger combo. The backside receiver runs a corner route while the inside slot underneath sits on a quick out, forming the classic high low smash read on that side. To the field, one receiver clears vertically on a seam or go route to hold the deep safety while the other runs a deep dig sitting behind the linebackers, with a shallow drag crossing underneath from the opposite slot to occupy the flat and short zone defenders. This is a zone beater built to stress cover 2 and cover 3 shells, with the primary read starting at the field side dig against the corner route clear out before working down to the smash combo and shallow drag as checkdowns.

Defensive Reads

Check the depth of the deep safeties pre-snap, since two high shells with soft corners invite the dig route behind the linebacker level. Watch the flat defender or cornerback assigned to the smash out route, because if he sinks with the corner route the underneath out is wide open for an easy completion. Key the middle linebacker or hook defender drop, since a shallow drop will collide with the drag route and signal a passing window for the dig instead. Man coverage with press corners and no safety help over the top shuts this down quickly, so bail to a quick game concept if you see man alignment before the snap. Look for a lurking user linebacker sitting in the dig window, since a smart user defender can rob that route and force you to check down to the drag or smash flat.

Usage Tips

Identify the safety shell before the snap because this concept is designed to punish two deep and three deep zone looks, not press man coverage.

Start your read on the field side dagger dig, since the vertical clear route occupies the deep safety and opens the window for the dig sitting behind the linebackers.

If the corner blitzes or the flat defender jumps the smash out route, work back to the corner route on the boundary for a one on one shot down the sideline.

Use the shallow drag as your checkdown against pressure or when the middle of the field is congested, especially on third and medium situations.

Pair this play with Z Spot or Spacing from the same set to keep the defense honest against quick zone drops, then come back to Smash Dagger once linebackers start sitting shallow.
