Mtn Post Swirl is a five wide route concept out of the Shotgun 5WR Tight set built to attack man and single high looks with a deep post shot paired with a swirl (whip/return) route underneath to manipulate zone defenders. The post is the primary read against man coverage or Cover 3, while the swirl route serves as a built-in checkdown against tight zone drops or when the deep window is not there. Protection is a five man empty look with no backfield help, so this play relies on getting the ball out quickly against pressure looks.
Identify single high safety shells before the snap since that alignment tells you the post route has a clean lane to work with Watch linebacker depth at the snap, shallow linebackers signal underneath zone drops that will sit on the swirl route and force you to the post Key the corner's leverage on the post route runner, outside leverage invites the post cut while inside leverage means the throw window closes fast Recognize Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells as the toughest matchup for this concept since two deep safeties can rob the post and clog the intermediate window Watch for disguised pressure off the edge since the empty backfield removes any extra blocker, a quick jailbreak blitz off either side forces an early or inaccurate throw
Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see one deep safety cheating toward the post side, look to your zone beater underneath instead of forcing the post throw
Use this play on early downs or in obvious passing situations where defenses are more likely to sit in zone shells rather than bring pressure
Hot route your underneath swirl runner into a quicker option against known blitz teams since the empty backfield leaves you without a check valve
Pair this play with Mtn Fork Salem or Mtn Double Post in the same set to keep defenders guessing on which post shot is coming and force safeties to widen their run fits pre-snap
Against man coverage, key the post route runner immediately off the snap, if the defender opens his hips late you have a natural window to drop the ball in stride
Use play action or tempo variation sparingly here since the empty look already signals pass, mix in QB Draw from this same set to punish defenses selling out on the drop
