Landingzone Safety Return Trap Middle is a kickoff return play run out of the Safety Kick Return formation, designed to set up a trap blocking scheme through the middle of the field. Blockers seal the inside lanes and bait coverage men to flow wide, creating a natural cutback lane for the returner up the gut. The primary read progression starts with the trap blocks at the second level, then transitions to identifying the first wall of blockers before making a one cut decision into the alley.
Watch for gunners releasing early off the line, if they get a clean jump downfield the trap blockers will struggle to seal the alley in time. Identify whether the coverage team is running a standard two-wave lane assignment or an overload toward one sideline, overloads open up the middle trap lane. Key on the first wave of tacklers filling inside gaps, if they stay disciplined and do not bite on blocker leverage the trap concept gets shut down quickly. Look for a spy or safety-type defender staying home in the middle lane pre-kick, this defender is the biggest threat to blow up the trap before it develops. Post-snap, track how fast the second wave of defenders converges toward the ball since a fast-flowing second level can close the cutback lane before the returner reaches it.
Scout the kicking team pre-snap for a hard directional kickoff since kick placement dictates whether the trap lane fully develops.
Wait for your blockers to engage the first level of coverage before committing to a cut, patience is key to letting the trap concept work.
Use this play after calling Landingzone Safety Return Left or Right earlier in the game to condition the return coverage to flow laterally, making the middle trap lane hit harder later.
Best used against kickers who consistently boot the ball to the same zone, since the blocking scheme is optimized for a predictable landing spot.
Avoid using this on obvious high hang time kicks where coverage has extra time to diagnose the trap since it removes the blocking lead time advantage.
