The blocking scheme stacks extra bodies on the right side to form a lead wedge, sealing the initial wave of coverage defenders and creating a running lane up the right hash before the returner cuts upfield. This is not a pass concept or RPO, it is a pure return play, and the primary read progression for the returner is to key the wedge blockers, press the crease behind the wall, and decide between hugging the sideline or cutting inside once the safety and outside contain defenders commit.
Watch how the kicking team sets its lane assignments pre-snap, if they are showing a heavy right-side contain look with extra defenders flowing that direction, this play will get bottled up quickly. Identify whether the return coverage is running a standard two-wave rush or an all-out sprint downfield, since a disciplined two-wave rush keeps lanes tighter and forces the returner to make earlier cuts. Key the first wave of tacklers as they approach the wedge, if they stack and force the point of attack instead of maintaining their lanes, the returner should cut backside away from the pile. Look for a user-controlled defender flying downfield trying to beat the wedge blockers with pure speed, this is the biggest threat to blow up the play before the blocking wall can set. If the coverage team consistently overloads bodies to the right hash on kickoffs, switch return calls to the left or middle variants in this set to keep the defense honest and prevent them from selling out to one side.
