Breakdown

Cover 2 Drop out of the Prevent 3 Deep set is a pure zone coverage call built to protect against explosive plays late in the half or with a big lead. The two deep safeties bail into deep half zones, the middle linebacker sinks straight downfield into a deep middle hole zone, and the two flanking underneath defenders (Sam and Will areas) sprint outward to wall off the flat and cushion any quick outs or curls. There is no blitz packaged in, no man leverage, and no pass rush emphasis shown in the diagram since all seven eligible defenders drop into coverage, making this strictly a zone beater deterrent rather than a man beater or pressure package.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the offense is running vertical stack or four verticals concepts since this shell is designed to bracket exactly those deep shots with the two deep halves and the middle linebacker. Watch the flat defenders' initial drop angle post-snap, if they widen too fast a savvy quarterback will attack the seams between the flat and deep half with a deep out or corner route. Key the middle linebacker's depth as your primary user-controlled defender, sinking him too shallow opens the deep middle for a post or dig route to split the safeties. This shell gets exploited by quick game and screens since there is no underneath flat presence close to the line, so expect offenses to attack with bubble screens or quick hitters if they sniff the prevent look. Man beating route combos with a natural rub or pick at the line can create separation before the zone defenders reach full depth, so watch for stack releases at the snap that try to beat the initial jam.

Usage Tips

Use this call almost exclusively in prevent situations such as end of half or end of game when you are protecting a lead and want to eliminate big plays over the top.

Pre-snap, check the offensive formation for stacked or bunch releases near the sideline since your flat defenders drop wide and can be vulnerable to underneath crossers if they widen too early.

Because every defender drops into a zone shell, user the deep middle linebacker to jump any dig or deep in route the quarterback tries to squeeze into the honey hole between the two safeties.

Pair this play in sequence with Cover 1 Contain or Man 3 Deep on early downs to disguise your shell, then switch to Cover 2 Drop once the offense is backed into a situation where they must throw deep.

Avoid calling this on run downs or standard distance situations since the lack of underneath run support and blitz pressure makes it a liability against inside runs and RPOs.
