Example Plays from Prevent

Overview

Prevent is a defensive formation, not an offensive one, and it exists for exactly one purpose: killing the clock and the deep third of the field. Out of the Big Quarter 3-1-7 personnel group, you get three down linemen, a single linebacker, and seven defensive backs spread across the width of the field. The 3 Deep set drops three defenders into extremely deep zones (often 25-plus yards off the ball at the snap), with the remaining underneath defenders spilling out to the numbers and sidelines. Pre-snap it looks absurd, and that is the point. There is no run fit, no edge pressure, and no intent to contest anything short of 15 yards.

The alignment logic is simple: force every completion to happen in front of you, then rally and tackle in bounds. Because you are running seven DBs, your coverage players carry speed and man coverage ratings that linebackers cannot match, so scramble drills, deep crossers, and sideline verticals all get bracketed naturally. The three deep defenders effectively overload the deep thirds while the flat and curl defenders wall off the boundary, which is where offenses want to work when they are out of timeouts. Prevent takes the sideline throw away and dares the offense to run a two-minute drill through the middle of the field where the clock keeps moving.

With only 6 plays in the formation, Prevent is a situational tool, not a package you build a scheme around. You are calling this when the opponent needs a chunk play or a touchdown with under 30 seconds left and no timeouts, or when you are protecting a two-score lead and want the drive to die on a checkdown. Anything outside those windows and you are giving away free yards on a platter.

Compatible Schemes

Prevent belongs to clock-management defensive schemes, not to any offensive system. It fits users who run nickel and dime heavy pass defense builds with a deep DB rotation, since the Big Quarter 3-1-7 personnel group demands seven playable defensive backs with real speed and man coverage numbers. Rosters stacked with rangy free safeties and hybrid nickel corners get the most out of the 3 Deep set, while teams built around linebacker play and interior pass rush should lean on standard Dollar or Quarter looks instead and treat Prevent purely as a last-play emergency call.

Strengths

  • Three deep defenders make the Hail Mary and deep sideline shot nearly unwinnable for the offense, especially if you user the middle deep defender and jump the ball at its highest point.
  • Big Quarter 3-1-7 personnel puts seven true defensive backs on the field, so speed and man coverage ratings stay high across every zone drop and scramble drill.
  • Underneath defenders align wide and deep enough that boundary comeback and out routes get walled off, forcing throws to the middle of the field where the clock continues to run.
  • Zero blitz risk means no free rushers get through and no coverage bust gives up a walk-in score, which is exactly what you want protecting a lead.
  • Excellent against the offensive scramble drill because every defender is already behind the sticks, so quarterback runs and improvisation gain very little.

Weaknesses

  • Completely indefensible against the run. Three down linemen, one linebacker, and no run fit means a simple inside zone or draw goes for 15-plus yards every single snap.
  • Any offense with timeouts left will carve you up with 10-yard outs and curls, stopping the clock and marching down the field without ever throwing deep.
  • Screens, RPO glance concepts, and quick check-with-me hot routes get free yards because underneath defenders are aligned too deep to contest the catch.
  • Zero pass rush pressure gives the quarterback unlimited time to survey the field, so a patient user quarterback will always find the soft spot between the underneath flat defenders and the deep thirds.
  • With only 6 plays available, savvy opponents recognize the shell immediately from your pre-snap alignment and audible into whatever concept beats it before you can make an adjustment.

Usage Tips

Only call Prevent when the opponent has no timeouts and needs 20-plus yards in under 30 seconds. Any other situation and a base Quarters or Dollar look is a better answer.

User the deepest middle defender and read the quarterback's shoulders. Prevent is designed to keep everything in front of you, so your job as the user is to break on the throw and tackle immediately to burn clock.

Manually pinch or spread your underneath defenders pre-snap depending on field position. Near the sideline you want them spilled wide to deny the out route, in the middle of the field you can tighten them up to shrink the crossing window.

Show a different shell first and audible into Prevent late from the same defensive playbook page so the offense cannot check into a run or a quick screen based on your alignment.

Never call Prevent back to back. If the offense picks up 12 yards on a checkdown, get out of the formation and back into a coverage that actually contests the intermediate levels, otherwise you are just letting them drive the length of the field for free.
