Breakdown

Smash Spot out of Pistol Wing Flex is a classic Cover 2 and Cover 3 beater built on the smash concept to one side and a spot combo to the other. To the boundary, the outside receiver runs a corner route while the inside receiver sits underneath on a quick out, stretching any flat defender or corner vertically and horizontally. To the field, the flexed TE runs a hitch to the flat, another receiver works a quick pivot/spot route in the intermediate window, and the HB releases out of the backfield on a wheel route up the sideline, creating a three level flood. Primary read progression starts with the corner/flat smash combo, then works to the HB wheel if the flat defender bites on the spot route, giving the quarterback both a Cover 2 beater (corner over the flat defender) and a Cover 3 beater (spot sitting in the seam with wheel stretching the deep third).

Defensive Reads

Identify two deep safeties pre-snap, which signals Cover 2 or Cover 4 and tells you the corner route on the smash side will have a soft spot behind the flat defender. A single high safety pre-snap indicates Cover 3 or Cover 1, meaning the spot route sitting down in the underneath zone and the HB wheel attacking the deep third become your best options. Post-snap, key the flat defender or curl/flat linebacker on the spot side, if he widens with the TE hitch or squats on the spot route, the wheel route behind him will be wide open. Watch for a user-controlled defender dropping into a lurk position over the spot route, which can jump the throw if the quarterback stares it down too long. Against man coverage, look for a blitz off the edge since the play has limited hot route protection adjustments, quick recognition and a fast throw to the flat or spot are essential to avoid a sack.

Usage Tips

Use this play on 2nd and medium to 3rd and long when you expect zone coverage, since both the smash and spot concepts are designed to attack zone drops rather than man leverage.

Check the pre-snap safety alignment: two high safeties confirm the smash side corner-flat combo will be open, while a single high safety tells you to prioritize the spot and wheel side.

Hot route the backside receiver into a quick slant or drag if you see man coverage with no safety help over the top, since the base concept is more effective versus zone.

Pair this play with Y Stick and Dagger in your play-calling sequence to keep defenses guessing between quick game, intermediate spot concepts, and shot plays off similar formation looks.

Watch the HB wheel route closely against Cover 3, it is often the biggest explosive play answer if the flat defender or curl/flat player squeezes down on the spot route.
