HB Draw out of Pistol Wing Flex shows a play-action fake with the QB stepping back before handing off to the HB, who delays behind the line to let the defense flow upfield before hitting the crease. The offensive line sells pass protection at the snap then transitions to run blocks, walling off the interior to open a lane between the tackles. This is a pure run play designed to bait aggressive pass rushers and blitzing linebackers, making it a strong counter against man and zone pressure looks alike. The primary read is patience: let the blocks develop, identify the first crease off the double team at the point of attack, and burst through once the second level is engaged.
Watch linebacker depth at the snap since draws thrive against blitzing or over aggressive linebackers who shoot gaps immediately. If the defense shows a two high shell with linebackers sitting in their zone drops rather than crashing downhill, this play will have a tougher time hitting a big gain. As the runner, key the defensive tackles and any user controlled defender spying the backfield, since a disciplined spy or lurk defender can blow up the delayed handoff. Man coverage with linebackers turning their backs in coverage is a green light for this run since there is no one left to fill the alley. Beware of defenses running a straight zero blitz or heavy A gap pressure package, since the interior blocking can get overwhelmed before the back finds the crease.
Call this play when the defense has shown blitz tendencies or aggressive linebacker fits on early downs, since the delayed handoff exploits over pursuit. Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to see if linebackers are keying run or creeping into blitz gaps before the snap. Manually control the HB and stay patient behind the line, resisting the urge to rush the crease so the blocking scheme up front can fully develop. Pair this with Y Stick or PA Post Shot from the same set so the defense has to respect play-action and cannot sit on the draw tendency. On third and short or second and manageable, this play punishes defenses that bring extra rushers or sell out on quick pass reads.
