Breakdown

Dagger out of Pistol Wing Flex sends the outermost receiver on a deep vertical seam to clear out the top of the coverage while the inside receiver runs the signature dagger route, a deep in that settles behind linebackers and in front of safeties. Underneath, the middle route breaks flat to the boundary to hold linebackers and flow defenders, and the backside receiver runs a shallow drag across the field as a checkdown and man beater against trailing defenders. This is a classic Cover 2 and Cover 3 beater built to attack zone drops with the dagger dig as the primary read, working to the deep vertical as a second read if the safety jumps the in-cut route.

Defensive Reads

Watch the free safety pre-snap: if he is aligned deep middle in a single-high shell, expect Cover 3 and target the dagger dig sitting between the linebackers and the deep third defender. Against two-high safeties, look for Cover 2 where the corners jump underneath routes and the safeties rotate late, meaning the deep vertical seam should occupy the safety while the dig sits behind the flat defender. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker's drop depth: a shallow drop signals zone coverage where the dig route has room to sit, while a hard man turn and run with the slot receiver signals man coverage and the shallow drag becomes the outlet. Beware disguised Cover 4 or match quarters looks where the safety sinks hard on the dig route, since this can bait an interception if the quarterback does not check to the vertical route in time. A blitzing look with linebackers crashing downhill pre-snap should push the quarterback to the shallow drag or flat route as a quick answer since the dagger dig will not have time to develop.

Usage Tips

Read the safeties pre-snap to confirm a two-high or single-high shell before committing to the dagger dig as your first read.

Progress from the deep in-cut route to the vertical seam route if the safety sinks under the dig, then check down to the shallow drag against man coverage or a hard blitz.

Use hot routes to convert the flat route into a quick spot or shallow cross if you diagnose a Cover 2 hard flat drop that clogs the underneath window.

Call this on second and medium or third and long since it takes time to develop, and pair it with Y Stick or HB Slip Screen earlier in a series to bait linebackers into sitting shallow before hitting the dagger dig.

Combine with PA Post Shot in your play-calling sequence to keep safeties honest deep, which opens up more space for the dagger dig underneath.
