HB Stretch Alert Dragon is an outside zone run out of the Pistol Strong Slot Close set with 21 personnel on the field. This is a zone run play at its core, not a play-action or RPO, with the primary read progression going from the playside double team or reach block, to the puller or lead blocker at the second level, then to the backside cutback lane if the front flows too hard.
Defensive Reads
Look for one high safety shells and light boxes pre-snap, this run hits hardest against base 4-3 or nickel fronts that respect the alert route and stay in coverage rather than crashing the box. Watch for a nickel or slot corner sitting outside to jump the alert route tag, if that defender bails immediately at the snap the run lane playside should stay clean. Identify overload run blitzes and stacked boxes with eight or more defenders, this is the primary counter to the stretch concept and forces a quick decision to bail into the alert route. Key the backside defensive end and any user-controlled linebacker flowing hard playside, a disciplined backside end who stays home can blow up the cutback lane that this run is designed to eventually hit. Watch linebacker depth and leverage after the snap, if linebackers overrun the stretch flow, the cutback window opens fast and the HB should press it before the backside pursuit closes.
Usage Tips
Check the box count pre-snap and if the defense has six or more in the box, consider hot routing the alert route to a quick bubble to punish overcommitted run fits.
Use this play on early downs (first and second and ten or medium) to stay balanced and keep the defense honest before dialing up play-action shots from the same Strong Slot Close look.
Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if the mike and will are crashing hard playside pre-snap, bounce the run outside using the stretch aiming point rather than trying to cut it back into a loaded box.
Pair this run with PA Boot Lt and F Lead Read Option from the same set so the defense has to respect both the outside zone track and the play-action boot off identical formation and personnel.
Against user-controlled defenders flying downhill on the HB, patience is key, let the zone blocking develop and trust the cutback lane instead of forcing the ball outside into a numbers disadvantage.
