PA Boot Lt is a play-action rollout off the Pistol Strong Slot Close look, faking the handoff before the QB boots left behind a five-man protection wall. The route diagram shows two vertical seam/post releases splitting deep down the middle, an underneath crosser working from right to left across the field as the primary boot read, and a flat route from the backside receiver dragging into the void underneath. This is a play-action shot play designed to attack zone defenses that bite on the run fake, with the QB progression starting at the deep crosser sitting down against zone or working across against man, then checking down to the flat route if the window closes.
Read the safety depth before the snap, a single high safety indicates man or zone coverage that leaves the deep middle vulnerable to the two vertical releases. Watch linebacker flow at the snap, if they bite hard on the run fake the crosser and flat route will have wide open throwing lanes underneath. Identify any user-controlled defender spying the rollout lane, an aggressive spy or contain defender can disrupt the QB before the crosser fully develops. Cover 3 and Cover 1 with no lurk underneath are the most exploitable shells against this concept since the flat and crosser occupy the vacated zones. Cover 2 with disciplined linebackers sitting on the drag route, or a strong edge contain rush from the defensive line, are the primary counters that shut this play down.
Use this on early downs, ideally 1st or 2nd and short to medium, when the defense is respecting the run based on personnel and formation tendencies.
Check for single high safety pre-snap since that alignment signals the defense is more susceptible to the run fake and opens up the deep crossing route.
If linebackers are sitting at depth showing zone drops, let the play-action fake fully develop before rolling out to sell the run and buy the crosser extra time to work across the field.
Hot route the backside flat receiver into a deeper option if you see man coverage with no underneath help, since the crosser becomes tougher to complete against tight man leverage.
Pair this play with HB Dive and Strong Power from the same set earlier in a series so the defense keys run action, making the boot fake far more effective on 2nd or 3rd down.
