Nickel Blitz 3 is a five man pressure package out of Single Mug that drops into Cover 3 behind the rush. Both slot corners rotate down as underneath zone defenders on crossing angles while the three deep defenders (two corners and a safety) run vertical zone drops to divide the field into thirds, and the middle linebacker sits in a shallow hook/curl zone. Up front, the Mug alignment sends four rushers off the interior with two additional edge threats crashing off the double mug look, creating a min protection blitz that pressures the quarterback while still playing sound zone behind it. Primary read progression starts with the two A gap rushers off the mug alignment, then works to the crossing underneath defenders if the quarterback tries to escape the pocket into the shallow zones.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth and slot corner alignment: if both slot corners are aligned tight to the line, that confirms the underneath crossing zone assignments shown in the diagram. Post-snap, key the quarterback's eyes toward the shallow crossing routes, since the rotated corners are designed to sit in those lanes and jump underneath throws. This beats man beater concepts and quick game that relies on space underneath, since the crossing zone defenders clog those throwing lanes immediately after the snap. Spread offenses running four verticals or deep shots can expose this if the five man rush does not get home fast enough, since only three defenders are covering deep thirds. Watch for offensive hot routes that flood one side of the field, since the crossing zone rotation can be outnumbered if both underneath defenders get pulled to the same side.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs when you expect a quick game or shallow crossing concept, since the underneath defenders are already leaning into those throwing lanes.
Disguise the double mug pre-snap by showing blitz look on both A gaps, then bail one linebacker into a zone drop after the snap to bait a hot read throw into coverage.
Pair this with Cov 3 Buzz Match or Cover 3 Match in the same set so the offense sees the same shell but gets different underneath rotations, keeping the quarterback guessing on where the void is.
User the middle hook defender if you expect a tight end or running back checkdown, since that is the primary soft spot in the shallow zone.
Use on third and medium or third and long against offenses that rely on quick game to beat pressure, since the deep thirds stay intact even with five rushers.
