This is a zone beater designed to confuse quarterbacks reading standard Cover 2 shells, and the primary read progression for the defense is to funnel underneath throws into the flat defenders while the inverted safeties rob any deep out or corner route breaking to the boundary.
Defensive Reads
Read the quarterback eyes immediately after the snap since Cover 2 Invert baits throws to the flat where the corners have rotated up to squeeze the route. Watch for quick outs and flat routes since the inverted corners are sitting on that exact throw and can jump underneath for a user pick. Key the mugged inside linebacker pre-snap since that green dot alignment threatens an A gap blitz but often drops into a shallow hook zone instead. This shell is vulnerable to deep crossers and dig routes that attack the seams between the inverted safeties and the retreating linebackers, so watch for offenses hunting the middle of the field. Post-snap, track the two deep safeties rolling into their halves late since a hard play action fake or run action can hold them and open up a shot play down the numbers.
