The corners read number two, sinking to jump the deep out or wheel while the safeties rotate to quarter the field, with underneath defenders squeezing curl-flat responsibilities. This is a pure defensive play, and the primary read progression for the defense starts with the flat defender keying the number two receiver before spinning into the deep quarter.
Defensive Reads
Watch the number two receiver at the snap, since Palms is designed to have the flat defender sink and jump any deep out or corner route from that receiver. Check safety depth pre-snap, if both safeties are shaded slightly outside the hashes you are aligned correctly to quarter the field against four vertical releases. This shell is vulnerable to quick slants and drag routes underneath, so user a linebacker to stay disciplined in the curl-flat zone rather than biting on play-action. Watch for rub routes or a bunch formation to the trips side, since traffic at the line can delay your flat defender's jump on the deep out and open a window. Against RPOs, keep an eye on the linebacker level, since Palms leaves light box numbers and can get exposed if the defense over rotates before confirming run or pass.
