HB Inside out of Near (Y Left Slot, 21 personnel) is a downhill dive run that attacks the interior gaps behind a base blocking scheme up front. The diagram shows the HB taking a quick angled path from the backfield through the A or B gap, following the double-team and combo blocks from the offensive line with the fullback leading through the hole. This is a straightforward run play with no route concept to beat man or zone coverage, so the primary read is the HB reading the initial double team at the point of attack, then bouncing off the fullback's block based on how the linebackers flow.
Pre-snap, count the box defenders and check linebacker depth, since stacked fronts with linebackers under five yards are sitting on the dive and will blow it up quickly. Watch for a Mike linebacker cheating toward the play side pre-snap, which signals the defense has diagnosed the strong side run tendency out of this formation. Post-snap, key whether the defensive tackles are two-gapping or shooting a single gap, since penetration up front kills the play before the fullback can lead block effectively. This run gets stopped cold against interior blitzes and run commit calls where linebackers crash downhill immediately, so avoid calling it into obvious run-blitz situations. It thrives against light boxes with five or fewer defenders in the box, particularly when the defense shows two-high shells that pull a safety out of the run fit.
Run this play on early downs like first and ten or second and short when you want to establish tempo and force the defense to respect the run before you turn to play-action shots later in the drive. Check the box count pre-snap: if the defense has six or more in the box you are better off going to Slants or Post Drag to get the ball out quickly instead of forcing HB Inside into a stacked front. Use motion or an audible to identify if the linebackers are creeping up expecting run, and if you see two safeties rotating down into the box, this is a green light since it confirms man or single high behind it. Pair this play with FB Dive and FB Dive Weak in the same set so the defense cannot key on one gap, then hit them with PA Read Special once they start flowing hard to stop the interior run. Against aggressive user linebackers who shoot gaps immediately at the snap, consider a quick hot route cut to bounce the play outside rather than forcing it into a clogged hole.
